Transform Your Kitchen Into A Zero-Waste Oasis: Expert Tips
Embracing a zero waste lifestyle can contribute to reducing environmental impact.
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the amount of waste generated in your kitchen? If so, you’re definitely not alone. In fact, many people are searching for practical ways to reduce their environmental footprint, and a zero waste kitchen is an excellent place to begin.
I recently took my client, Angela, on a transformative trip to ReGrocery at their Highland Park location in Los Angeles. This zero waste grocery store had such a profound impact on her that, in turn, it inspired her to completely overhaul her kitchen. Before the revamp, Angela was feeling frustrated by the constant mess in her pantry, the tendency to overbuy groceries, and the frequent discovery of expired items. Sound familiar? If so, you’re not alone—I’ve been there too. However, the changes she made not only helped minimize her waste but also resulted in a more functional and organized space.
If you’re wondering how to achieve similar results, you’re in the right place! By following some simple yet effective steps, you can make your kitchen both more sustainable and efficient. Let’s dive into how you can start making some zero waste changes today!
What does zero waste even mean?
If this is your first time hearing the term “zero waste,” don’t worry—you’re not alone! In fact, I first encountered the concept back in 2017 while walking through the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. I happened to stumble into The Package Free Shop, and it was there that I became completely captivated by the idea of supporting package-free stores.
Zero waste is an approach to living that emphasizes reducing the amount of waste we produce. At its core, it encourages us to rethink how we use and dispose of resources. Rather than simply throwing things away, zero waste promotes practices such as reusing items, recycling materials, and composting organic waste. The overarching goal is to transition towards a circular economy, where products are designed to be repurposed instead of discarded.
By adopting these practices, we can collectively help protect the environment and create a more sustainable future for all. Whether you’re just starting to explore zero waste or looking to deepen your commitment, it’s important to remember that every small change we make truly does have the potential to make a significant impact. So, no matter where you are on your journey, every step counts!
Embrace Bulk Buying
One of the first changes Angela made on this zero waste journey was to embrace bulk buying. At ReGrocery, she discovered the joy of purchasing grains, nuts, spices and household goods without packaging. Invest in reusable containers and bring them to the store for filling. You can reuse jars you already have or purchase your own. It not only cuts down on waste but also saves money in the long run. In addition, look for local stores that offer bulk bins, or consider joining a community co-op.
Organize with Reusable Storage
Angela replaced disposable bags and containers with reusable options. Glass jars, silicone bags, and beeswax wraps became staples in her kitchen. Not only are these items more environmentally friendly, but they also help keep your food fresh and visible, making meal prep easier.

Replace single-use items with reusable alternatives. Consider:
– Cloth napkins instead of paper towels.
– Reusable produce bags for shopping.
– Glass containers for leftovers and meal prep.
– Stainless steel, glass or silicone straws if you enjoy smoothies or drinks.
Compost Your Scraps
Every zero waste kitchen needs a compost bin for food scraps. This is where you can compost your vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and other organic waste. Composting not only reduces landfill waste but also creates nutrient-rich soil for gardening. If space is limited, consider a countertop composter or, alternatively, an indoor composter bin . In some cities they provide organic waste bins upon request, check out your cities waste management website to find out if they provide this service.
Meal Planning
Planning your meals for the week can significantly reduce food waste. This not only saves money but also ensures that nothing goes to waste. Make a shopping list based on your meal plan and stick to it. Be creative with leftovers to minimize spoilage. I personally shop weekly and to help me stay on track I look at everything I have and shop my own kitchen first. Then I will make a list of the items I will cook for the week. This has helped me considerably cut down on my spending and food wastage. Consider using a whiteboard or a digital app to keep track of your meal plans and shopping lists.
DIY Cleaning Products
Instead of buying commercial cleaning products, consider making your own. Simple mixtures of vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils can clean most surfaces effectively. Our favorite all purpose Thieves Cleaner from Young Living is what we have been using for many years. It’s concentrated so you only need to add one or two capfuls and add water. You can also add hydrogen peroxide or vinegar to the mix as well. We use this for literally every surface of our home and is safe for pets and children.

Organize for Accessibility
One of Angela’s main challenges was not utilizing all the items in her pantry, which often led to overbuying and unnecessary waste. However, a well-organized kitchen can help in transforming your habits. For instance, opt for transparent containers to store bulk items, and be sure to label everything clearly in order to reduce confusion. Additionally, ensure that your reusable items are conveniently accessible, which will ultimately promote their regular use. By making these simple changes your kitchen experience will be more functional and efficient.
