Bathroom Organization Tips: 5 Simple Ways to Declutter

From Cluttered to Calm: A Real Bathroom Makeover

When my client moved into his newly renovated home, his bathroom was a blank slate—an ideal starting point for effective bathroom organization. While the space looked great at first glance, his belongings were placed randomly wherever there was room. Like many people after a move, it lacked a clear system. Most items were still in boxes or scattered in drawers, creating hidden clutter.

My client wanted a minimalistic and clean aesthetic. He gave me direction of the look and feel that he wanted. My goal was to bring structure and calm, turning the bathroom into a highly functional and organized space. Making sure that each item had a home and that everything was easy to find. Below are five bathroom organization tips I used to achieve that transformation—tips you can easily apply to your own home.

Step 1: Clear Out Everything for Better Bathroom Organization

To begin organizing, you need a clean slate. First, empty every drawer, cabinet, and shelf. Without seeing everything you own, it’s impossible to create an effective system.

Next, sort through all your items and toss anything expired, broken, or unused. This simple step often reveals how much unnecessary clutter is hiding in plain sight. Consequently, you’ll already be closer to a decluttered bathroom.

Step 2: Sort Bathroom Items by Category to Stay Organized

Once you’ve decluttered, group similar items together—daily skincare, haircare products, dental tools, backup supplies, and guest toiletries. This step helps you plan storage based on what you actually use.

For example, in this client’s bathroom, we used shallow drawer organizers for daily-use items and stored less frequently used products in bins under the sink. As a result, everything had a clear, logical place.

Step 3: Use Clear Storage Solutions to Streamline Your Bathroom

After categorizing, it’s time to contain the chaos. Using clear bins, drawer dividers, and visible labels makes it easy to keep things in order.

Additionally, transparent containers help you see what’s inside without digging through piles. In this project, I used 2-tiered organizers and small clear organizers in different sizes for the drawers. Therefore, every product had a “home,” which made it easier to maintain a truly organized bathroom.

Step 4: Keep Countertops Clear for a Clutter-Free Bathroom

Another essential tip for better bathroom organization is to keep your countertops as empty as possible. A cluttered surface quickly creates a sense of disorder, even in an otherwise clean space.

Instead, only display daily essentials—such as a hand soap or toothbrush holder. Meanwhile, store everything else in drawers or cabinets. This approach made a dramatic difference in my client’s space, especially with the black minimalistic items to match the theme of the bathroom.

Step 5: Create a Bathroom Organization System You Can Maintain

Lastly, your bathroom organization system should be easy to maintain. Think grab-and-go access, intuitive placement, and zero guesswork.

For this reason, I created a layout that avoided overstuffed bins and confusing storage. When everything has a place and a purpose, keeping things neat becomes second nature.
